In a post on X, Senator Paul characterized the mayor’s appeal as “proof that communism is (unfortunately) alive and well.” The remark reflects a broader conservative critique that government-led conservation efforts overstep individual freedoms.
However, CNN anchor Abby Phillip pushed back on the criticism during a panel discussion, noting that Republican leaders have made similar requests of their constituents during extreme weather events. “This is not a partisan issue,” Phillip said. “Conservation is something everyone can agree on when the grid is under strain.”
