Instead of traditional formalities, the couple incorporated arcade games, a raffle, and an intimate atmosphere that left guests remembering how they felt rather than what they saw.
According to wedding experts, this shift reflects a broader desire among couples to bring fun and authenticity back to their big day. “We’re seeing a desire to take some of the stiffness and formality out of weddings and bring the fun back,” said Akeshi Akinseye, founder of Kesh Events. The arcade games and raffle, she explained, build anticipation and make guests active participants rather than passive observers.
Experience designer Julie Comfort, who works with wedding planners, describes her role as executing emotional design—crafting how a wedding makes guests feel. She notes that this doesn’t always require a huge budget. For example, a recent wedding she designed featured friends singing along during the first dance, with music gradually fading to create a magical moment. “Couples are realizing they don’t have to go over the top to make an impact,” Comfort said. “They just have to be more thoughtful, intentional, and generous with how they host people.”
The choice of venue also plays a key role. Madison Square Garden, known as “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” was transformed into an intimate garden setting. A guest described it as feeling like “a lush countryside retreat,” despite the venue’s typical association with sports and concerts. This has encouraged couples to think beyond traditional wedding venues and ask, “What could this space become?”
For couples inspired by the Swift-Kelce wedding, Akinseye advises not to replicate the event but to understand why certain moments resonated and translate that feeling into something authentic to their own celebration. As online fatigue grows, more couples are expected to prioritize presence and connection over social media content creation, making experience design a key element in modern weddings.
